Grant to support “Senior Success Stories”: Providing medical care to senior puppy mill survivors.
ROCHESTER & BUFFALO, NY (12/5/25)- Puppy Mill Rescue Team is the proud recipient of a $20,000.00 grant from the Kenneth A. Scott Charitable Trust, a KeyBank Trust to support medical expenses for senior rescue dogs.
We are so grateful that this wonderful foundation has acknowledged our mission with this incredible gift.
Senior dogs come into our rescue in many ways. Some have been brought to shelters when their owners can no longer care for them- then transferred to us, others are found as strays, owner surrenders, and many come from puppy mills.
Puppy mills operate as pure profit seekers. When dogs are unable to generate a profit for the breeder they are discarded. Senior mill dogs have lived their lives in unbearable conditions: confined to crates around the clock, poor diets, lack of medical care, females being bred repeatedly every heat cycle. After years of neglect, they are in dire need of medical care.
“We are very successful in finding adopters for senior dogs, but sadly, these dogs often require expensive medical intervention to help them live pain free and in good health,” said Lisa Jackson, Rescue Director of PMRT. Their expenses far exceed their adoption fees, sometimes limiting the number of seniors we can rescue due to budget constraints. Unfortunately, finances are always something we have to consider as an organization that runs solely on donations. This grant will finance dental surgeries, mass removals, and other medical conditions often encountered by senior dogs.
Thanks to the Kenneth A. Scott Charitable Trust, a KeyBank Trust we can make way for more dogs in wait for rescue from shelters or freedom from the captivity of puppy mills, the first step in their journey to a life worth living. “Since our inception in 2019 we have made miracles happen for more than 3500 dogs and we strive to continue fighting for those without a voice,” according to Jackson.
